Peugeot 508
The New Peugeot 508 replaced both the 407 and 607 models and is a wonderful car to drive. It is built in the Rennes plant in France alongside the Citroen C5. The 508 saloon is 4.79 m (189 in) long, while the 508 SW (station wagon) is 4.81 m (189 in) long. Peugeot's new large estate and saloon offers interior space to match the 607, but within smaller exterior dimensions, and that although it is 10cm longer than the 407, that it weighs an average of 35Kg less.
Why Alan Milne Admires the Peugeot 508 so much
We all admire and love the way the New Peugeot 508 has added maturity to the range. The exterior styling has lost some of the individualism of the 407, and potentially is a little more reserved as a consequence, but the interior is an unqualified and huge leap forward and is comfortable, spacious and noticeably more up market. Clearly this GT model represents the 508 in its best light, with full leather trim and full colour information screens, but in the design, arrangement and action of the main switchgear the 508 is class-leading.
What we like most about the Peugeot 508
Alan Milne like the 508’s overall refinement. Helped by a standard fit acoustic windscreen and dampers on the front axle to reduce engine vibration, the 508's cabin is remarkably hushed, in terms of wind, road and engine noise. Other engines in the range, which include two 1.6-litre petrols, and several diesels including an e-HDi version with stop-start and emissions of 109g/km, may be more vocal, but this 2.2-litre is impressively quiet.

Trim levels range from the entry-level Access – which features the basics including air conditioning – through SR, Active, Allure and GT. We like what the SR has to offer. The best proposition, as it’s aimed at the volume fleet market and comes with alloy wheels, cruise control, satnav with Bluetooth and all the safety equipment you could ask for.
What the media say?
Autotrader “There’s no real weak link in the engine range, with all offering respectable performance, fine refinement and good economy. Even pushed the diesels remain unflustered and quiet.”
Evo “Against mainstream rivals, it's the best – in GT form at least. There's no real reason why it can't also be considered against an Audi A4 (it's better), a Mercedes C-class (on a par) or a BMW 3-series (roomier, as good at perceived quality.
Looking after your Carbon footprint
Peugeot’s new executive saloon comes with e-HDi Stop and Start technology, which reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 15 per cent (compared to equivalent non e-HDi version) in urban environments. The 1.6-litre 508 e-HDi 112 FAP. When new electronically controlled air intakes are introduced during 2011, emissions will drop further to 109g/km of CO2
Which engine does Alan Milne recommend?
We cant see past a Peugeot diesel engine. The 508 will be powered by a range of highly efficient engines that will benefit from the latest technology including Peugeot’s new e-HDi stop-and-start-system. The system works by turning off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop, such as at traffic lights, and restarting the engine automatically when the accelerator is pushed. It works to dramatically reduce fuel consumption, and therefore CO2 emissions.
